Fishing Rod Blank Action Explained

Fishing Rod Blank Selection

Blank selection is crucial when deciding what blank to build a custom fishing rod on, especially when you are buying online. When purchasing a blank online you have to go off specs posted on a website, you can't pick it up and really feel if its the right fit for you.

Taper- The taper of a blank is going to refer to essentially how "soft" the tip of the rod is and how far down the blank before it shuts off and stops bending.

  • Extra Fast- This taper is going to have very little play in the tip section and will be rather stiff. This blank will typically "shut off" in the top 1/4 of the tip.

  • Fast- As you probably guessed this action is going to have a little more play that the Extra Fast, but generally speaking it will still be a pretty stout rod shutting off at about the 1/3 mark.

  • Moderate- This action will be better for casting distance, although you will sacrifice some sensitivity. These blanks will require one or two more guides do to the flexing. Good for treble hooks due to the fact that the rod is soft and will be more forgiving for pulling hooks. Should shut off around the 1/2 mark.

  • Slow- The modern day noodle rod, these are often used as crankbait rods. Same features as the moderate action although even softer sometimes even bending all the way through the blank.

Power-   Power on a fishing rod blank will refer to the rods lifting strength. heavier power rods will handle heavy line weights and lighter powers will be good for light lines.

Material- When it came down to blank building in the past, fiberglass ruled all. It was very strong, durable, and many love it for the softer more forgiving action. The one problem with glass rods is they are much heavier and much less sensitive than Graphite carbon which has slowly been taking over during the last decade.
  • Graphite-  These days graphite is produced using extremely high temperatures in a two-part process, one to create tensile strength and one for stiffness. Temperatures sometimes exceed 3000 degrees! Generally the hotter the furnace in each process the more tensile strength and stiffness the fibers have, which means you need less material to build a rod, and the rods you do build can be lighter and more sensitive.
Weight- Blanks will often show the recommended lure weight, typically in ounces. If you will be casing lures within that recommenced range it is a good choice to get optimal performance. Overloading the blank can lead it to break during casting.

Custom Fishing Rods- Your Way!

The reason why most get into custom fishing rod building is to fill their own personal demand for creativity expressed through essentially a graphite / Fiberglass stick, and I was no exception. I have been building rods since I was 13 years old, now 23 even with ten years of experience I still feel like I'm able to find new ways to create, I feel as if the options are limitless. I started just like many, the old fashion way with just a cardboard box and a thread bobbin.

I now continue to build rods for fun and on this blog I plan to share images of my work along with knowledge I have accumulated along the way.
